Our school system needs some serious upgrades and changes to just about every aspect of it. Currently we have 49.3 million Public School K through 12 students in the US below is my proposed education system.
There is an average of 1180 Students per zipcode, I would like classrooms cut down to a standard size of 14 students per classroom. This makes it roughly 85 Teachers per zip code. A Total of 3.5 Million Teachers
Each classroom will be 450sqft in size, (30 foot by 15 foot)
Teachers will be paid $50,000 per year, period. It does not matter what city, state or whatever, they all get paid a flat $50,000. HOWEVER all teachers will have $20,000 taken off of their school loans each year that they complete a full school year of teaching, payments are also deferred while teaching. This helps encourage teachers back to being there for the children, and gets rid of some of the stress current teachers face with school loans. This also helps equalize the economy across the nation. A Total of 175 Billion in salaries for teachers per year.
Each school will maintain a maximum of 394 students, therefore there will be a total average of 3 schools per zip code. A total of 125,430 Total Schools
Each teacher will be given a brand new $1000 Laptop each and every year, helping teachers to stay up to date.
Each student will be given a Tablet each and every year, Backpacks are not allowed, nor will there be any lockers, all books are digital. Tablets will be purchased at $300 a piece, but of course with such a large bulk purchase each year we should have no problem getting tablets worth significantly more from the manufacturers.
Each school will be given $1000 per year per student enrolled to be spent on material used for each student specifically.
The school will spend a total of $50 per student per year for Digital books, whatever publisher agrees to supply all the books at that price gets the contract.
Lunch will be provided free of charge to every student, and the quality will increase, the total amount spent will equal $2 per meal per student. Meals will be provided with only 2 options, one normal meal and one organic vegan meal, no other options will be given. Students are not allowed to bring outside food, however if a student has a specific diet because of health concerns and one of the above meals does not meet those needs then the chefs will prepare a separate meal of the chefs choosing for that student each day.
All schools will maintain uniforms, all schools will wear the same uniforms as well except for the logos embroidered on the shirts, those will be custom for the school logo. Uniforms will differ only between school levels not cities/states and so forth. $50 per uniform will be spent, each student will be given 6 uniforms per year.
Each school will maintain 4 Salary Janitors, being paid a salary of $40,000 per year.
Each school will maintain 2 Repair men and 2 IT Specialist being paid a salary of $60,000 per year
Each school will maintain 4 Private security personal, they will be fully armed and WILL NOT be in uniforms. they will be paid $60,000 per year
Each school will maintain 2 RN's paid at $50,000 per year
Each school will maintain 8 administrative personal paid at $50,000 per year no matter what their title is.
Each school will have 8 chefs to prepare lunch, paid at $25,000 per year. Chefs only prepare and make the one meal, therefore they are paid less because they can also maintain jobs at restaurants at night or the afternoon or breakfast time.
Each highschool will maintain 6 Professors paid $90,000 per year
Each average zip code will maintain 7 School bus drivers paid $40,000 per year
Each school will be given $1,000,000 each year for additional equipment, supplies, upgrades or whatever. Each year 1 month before school begins the teachers will meet to decide on were the money goes, each teach gets one vote, (administrators do not get to vote or even be present). If any idea receives at least 60% of the votes then that idea goes forward otherwise if no idea can reach the 60% mark then the money is split evenly between each and every teacher to choose to spend it as they please for their class's. Any money leftover at the end of the year will be put back together and the administrators will then decide on where the remainder is spent. No money ever goes back to the government, so there is never a need for teachers to "spend it or lose it".
Classes are arranged differently. Each student no matter the grade will have a total of 14 classes. Each day will consist of seven 45 Minute classes, and one 1 hour lunch period. Classes will rotate between "A" Days and "B" Days. Students will not pick there classes. Every student will take the same 14 classes, Terms will last 3 months, a school year will consist of 3 terms. Every term the classes switch out for new ones. A total of 42 classes will be taken each school year by each student.
Each term students are assigned to a "Group" of 14 students, this group has a designated classroom that is theirs for one whole term, students do not move between classes, instead each hour they are given 5 minutes to get up and move around the classroom while the teach leaves and the new one arrives. Students never leave the classrooms except to go the bathroom and for lunch breaks.
Grades 9 through 12 the classes are ALL College accredited classes, this makes it so that not only does the student graduate with a highschool diploma but they graduate with a Bachelors degree in General education. However although they are accredited classes, the students still cannot choose their classes therefore all students graduate with the same degree. HOWEVER each school will also offer additional classes after the regular classes each day that are in other fields that will allow a student to specialize in a specific field so that they have the option to graduate with a different bachelors degree if chosen. Not every degree is offered, but there will be additional options. Schools maintain 6 professors, each from a different degree program, that will allow the school to offer extra classes from 6 different fields to allow students the option to graduate with specialty degrees. These classes are not required of a student, but if they choose to take them they can do so to help further their education and alter their degree.
School classrooms will not use white boards or chalk boards, instead they will use interactive lcd screens, that are streamed to the tablets in the classrooms. This allows each student to see what the teacher is teaching up close. ALSO each stream is recorded to the students tablet including the voice recording, this allows the student to review the class later when doing homework should they need to.
Teachers are all expected to remain in school for an additional hour each day at the end of the day to allow students who need extra teaching/tutoring to come in after and get help. Tutoring/Teaching is offered to ANY student, even from another school, so if a student from a higher grade needs a refresher they can go to the lower grade school teacher and do just that.
Elementary schools start at 9am and get out at 4:15pm, Middle school starts at 8pm and gets out at 3:15pm, Highschool starts at 7am and gets out at 2:15pm.
School bus drivers pick up and drop off kids from all three schools, giving them 1 hour between each pickup/dropoff to get all the kids to were they need to be. Drivers drive 6 hours a day roughly and are expected to put in an additional 2 hours a day in cleaning, repairing and maintaining the buses.
Elementary schools will no longer have recess, instead they will have classes that are taught outside, such as physical education that may focus on soccer, basketball, or even the jungle gym. As students get older physical education focus's on better fitness routines then simply playing on a jungle gym or playing games.
With the above system students safety would be significantly risen, grades would rise, bullying would be reduced or even eliminated completely, and every school would be given the same treatment as any other therefore increasing the overall well being and success rates of the students. It would also guarantee a college accredited degree for every student, therefore significantly increasing the employ ability of students.
The total cost of the program would be roughly $637.74 Billion per year, an increase of 129.74 billion more then we are currently spending on the education system. HOWEVER this would be covered by the federal government in its entirety thus significantly freeing up money from each state/city for other uses.
